Tired of the Chaos? 9 Quick Solutions to Simplify Your Home

Homemaking

3 Mar

Have you ever wished there was a magic button to help simplify your home — and your life?

Imagine this: It’s 8 p.m. on a weeknight. Your spouse is home from work, your kids are home from school, and you’re all exhausted. It’s time for the kids to eat, shower, and sleep. Then you’ll need a minute to prepare for tomorrow, when you get to do it all again.

You open the front door with your nightly routine in mind, but you step on backpacks and cleats that have littered the front hall. As you yell for the kids to pick up their mess, your eye travels to the kitchen, where dishes are piled up in the sink and mail clutters the counter. As you step in something sticky (what the heck is that?!), your nightly routine disappears from your thoughts. Instead of winding down for the day, you’re suddenly wound up. It will take hours to clean up this mess, and you can forget about watching your favorite show before bed.

Sound familiar?

In today’s fast-paced world, our homes should be a sanctuary—a place to unwind, recharge, and enjoy time with our families. However, clutter, chaos, and unnecessary distractions quickly turn home into just another source of stress. That’s when it’s time to simplify your home.

Simplifying your home doesn’t mean giving up everything you love or hosting the world’s biggest yard sale—though sometimes a yard sale is necessary. It means creating an environment that is functional, peaceful, and aligned with your lifestyle. Here are ten practical ways to simplify your home and bring more calm into your daily life.

1. Declutter With Purpose for functionality

Decluttering is the first and most important step toward simplifying your home. Instead of tackling everything at once, focus on one area at a time—whether it’s a closet, a kitchen drawer, or a single room. I like to start in the areas I use the most, and I don’t necessarily declutter a whole room at a time.

Instead, I follow my own trail through this house, starting with my bed.

When I wake up in the morning, I reach for my glasses, phone, and Apple watch. So my nightstand is almost always clear and tidy. Next, I make sure my kids have a clear area to lay out their clothes, bags, and water bottles each night. The kitchen is next, but there’s really no reason to focus on the cabinets full of serving pieces. Instead, I make sure my counters are clear, my pantry is ready for groceries, and my fridge is free of moldy leftovers.

Questions to Ask to Help You Declutter Your Home

As you declutter, ask yourself:

  • Do I use this regularly? If the answer is “no,” then you should either put it in storage or throw it out.
  • Does this item bring me joy or serve a purpose? If the answer is “yes,” find a place for it. Otherwise, get rid of it.
  • Would I miss it if it were gone? If not, get rid of it.
  • Will I need it within the next 48 hours? If “yes,” find a place for it now. If not, you can get rid of it or worry about it later.
  • And my personal favorite: If this item were covered in dog poop, would I clean it, replace it, or throw it out?

Donate, sell, or discard anything that no longer serves you. Adopting a minimalist mindset doesn’t mean you have to get rid of everything, but it does mean keeping only what truly adds value to your life.

Bonus tip: If you are truly overwhelmed, find a small space, like a closet. Now, find an even smaller space, like a shelf. Empty the whole shelf. Now only put things back if you truly want them in that space. Rule: Everything must fit in the space! If any items are left, either donate them, throw them out, or find a new home for them.

2. Adopt a “One In, One Out” Rule TO LIMIT CLUTTER

To prevent clutter from creeping back in, implement the “one in, one out” rule: Every time you bring a new item into your home, get rid of something similar. For example, if you buy a new pair of shoes, donate an old pair. This practice keeps your space from becoming overcrowded and helps maintain order.

Sometimes I take this a step further. If I come home with a bag full of new clothes, I clean out a whole bag of old clothes to donate. Once the old items are gone, then I can put the new items away.

3. Create Simple and Functional Storage Solutions THAT WORK WITH YOUR BRAIN

A clutter-free home doesn’t mean a home without storage—it means having a place for everything. Invest in functional storage solutions such as baskets, bins, drawer organizers, and shelving to keep things tidy. Labeling storage containers can also help ensure everything gets put back where it belongs, making daily cleanup easier.

While functional storage is an absolute necessity, it’s not the first thing you should do.

Sometimes I get so caught up in organizing that I immediately buy a whole bunch of new baskets and bins to help me get started. But then nothing fits into the space like I imagined it, and I’m left with more clutter than I started with.

Instead, clear everything out first. Whether it’s a donation, trash, or just moving to a new spot, get it out of there. Then measure the area and think about how you plan to use it going forward. Finally, purchase your storage containers, paying special attention to dimensions and functionality.

For example, I once bought a bunch of under-the-bed storage bins for my kids’ toys. They were lovely. However, they all had lids, and I quickly realized the lids were a bad idea. My kids didn’t want to deal with lids. The toys were a bit too tall, and the lids wouldn’t close correctly. The lids all ended up on the floor, and they eventually got cracked and broken from being stepped on too many times. So, my biggest tip here is to focus on functionality and not just aesthetics. It won’t look pretty if no one uses it correctly.

4. Streamline Your Daily Routines to make life less overwhelming

A simplified home runs smoothly. Establishing daily routines can prevent chaos and make your home more manageable. Some key routines to consider include:

  • A morning routine to set a positive tone for the day
  • A nighttime routine to reset your home before bed
  • A laundry schedule to avoid overwhelming piles of clothes
  • A meal-planning routine to simplify grocery shopping and meal prep
  • An after-school routine to make sure homework gets done
  • A cleaning routine so you can tackle all your tasks throughout the week
  • A meal planning routine to streamline your grocery shopping

Having consistent routines reduces decision fatigue and keeps your home in order effortlessly. I talk a lot about routines at Make Life Cozy. You’ll even find some free printable resources to help you get your routines in order.

5. Embrace a Capsule Wardrobe TO MAKE GETTING DRESSED A BREEZE

A closet full of clothes yet “nothing to wear” is a common frustration. Simplify your wardrobe by creating a capsule collection—curated pieces that are versatile, timeless, and high-quality. Stick to a color palette and choose items that mix and match easily. A capsule wardrobe not only saves time and money but also reduces stress when getting dressed.

Hate the idea of one color palette? That’s okay! My wardrobe isn’t focused on a color palette. Instead, I have a basic “uniform” I wear every day. It’s leggings, a tee shirt, a sweatshirt, and sneakers. Is it plain? Yes. Is it comfortable? Absolutely. Is it easy to wash, dry, and put away? Yes!

6. Minimize Paper Clutter TO SIMPLIFY YOUR HOME

Paper clutter can quickly take over your home. To keep it under control:

  • Go paperless with bills and statements
  • Create a designated spot for incoming mail
  • Set up a filing system for important documents
  • Shred or recycle unnecessary papers regularly
  • Choose a day each week to handle paper clutter. My day is Friday. I pay the bills, sort the mail, fill out all the school forms, etc. Until Friday, everything sits in my paper tray.

Digitizing receipts, manuals, and other paperwork can also free up physical space while keeping important information easily accessible. All that artwork my kids bring home from school? I upload it to Dropbox and Instagram. Then I create Chatbooks so I can look through it easily later. Any special artwork or mementos go into a file box that I keep handy in a nearby closet.

7. Reduce Visual Clutter TO MAKE THINGS FEEL MORE TIDY

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see people make. Their home is clean and tidy, yet it somehow still feels messy. They don’t know why.

The reason is simple: Even if a home is technically clean, too many items on display can make it feel overwhelming. Keep countertops, shelves, and surfaces as clear as possible. Limit decor to meaningful pieces that truly bring you joy. This allows your home to feel more open, peaceful, and visually appealing.

Example: Check your bathroom. How many items on your counter actually belong on a bathroom counter? Here’s a hint: toothpaste, shampoo, face wash, etc. do not belong on the counter. Yes, know you use them every day. Yes, I know it’s convenient. But it’s also an eyesore. If you’re out of storage space, get a bin with a lid to contain everything. It will make such a difference, I promise.

8. Simplify Your HOME Cleaning Routine

A clean home doesn’t have to require hours of work. Simplify cleaning by:

  • Using multipurpose cleaners to reduce the number of products you need
  • Establishing a daily 10-15 minute tidying routine
  • Keeping cleaning supplies easily accessible in each area of the home
  • Implementing a weekly cleaning schedule to break tasks into manageable chunks (see #4 above)

Many of us are perfectionists (myself included). When a perfectionist has a messy house and very little time to clean it, the house will likely get dirtier and dirtier. Why? Because we have a system, and there’s no time to implement that system. So we just… don’t.

For example, my kitchen floors really need to be mopped at least twice a week. But in my head, I feel like I can’t mop until I wipe off the counters and clean the cabinets. I can’t wipe down the counters until all the clutter is put away and the dishes are washed. And I can’t wash the dishes until the dishwasher is empty. If I’m washing the dishes, I might as well wash all the containers of leftovers from the fridge.

Mopping only takes 5 or 10 minutes. But perfectionist mopping can easily take several hours, so it just doesn’t get done.

Instead, I’ve started diving in whenever and wherever I can. If I find a sticky spot on the floor but I’m rushing out the door, I grab a paper towel and clean it up. Done.

If I have 10 minutes to mop (but I don’t have hours to clean first), I grab the mop bucket and get it done. I can worry about the rest later.

Is my house ever 100% clean? Rarely. But it’s usually clean enough, and that’s all that really matters.

9. Prioritize Cozy and Functional Spaces SO YOU CAN RELAX IN PEACE

Finally, a simplified home should also feel cozy and welcoming. Focus on creating spaces that encourage relaxation and connection. Some simple ways to achieve this include:

  • Using soft lighting and warm colors
  • Adding cozy textures like blankets and throw pillows
  • Keeping seating areas comfortable and clutter-free
  • Displaying meaningful items rather than random decorations

A simplified home is about creating an environment that supports your well-being and daily life rather than adding to your stress. Find the areas that your family gravitates to most. That’s most likely the living room or den and bedrooms. Make sure the beds have clean sheets and are neatly made each day. Refresh your sofa by washing the covers and throw pillows, then add a fresh blanket or two. Lamps are a great way to add some soft lighting that feels more relaxing than glaring overhead lights.

SIMPLIFY YOUR HOME NOW

Simplifying your home isn’t about perfection—it’s about making your space work for you in a way that brings more peace and ease into your life. By decluttering with intention, streamlining daily routines, and prioritizing functionality, you can create a cozy, organized home that truly feels like a sanctuary. But you know the most important step? Starting now.

What’s one area of your home you’d love to simplify first? Think of your family’s daily routine for inspiration. Is there a specific area or task that feels overwhelming? Is there a favorite cozy spot that could use some TLC? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
